Hytale Multiplayer Guide

1. Connection Methods

Hytale offers two primary ways to play with others: direct IP connection and the server browser.

Direct IP Connect

Connect directly to any server using its IP address and port.

ip.address:5520

Format: IP address followed by colon and port number

Server Browser

Browse public servers with filtering and search options.

Browse Servers

Default Port: Hytale uses UDP port 5520 by default. If the server uses the default port, you can often just enter the IP address without specifying the port.

2. Joining Friends

If Your Friend is Hosting

To join a friend who is running a server on their computer:

1Ask your friend for their public IP address (they can find it at whatismyip.com)
2Ensure they have port forwarded UDP 5520 on their router
3In Hytale, use Direct Connect and enter: [their-ip]:5520

Important: Your friend must complete port forwarding for you to connect from outside their local network. See our Server Hosting Guide for detailed instructions.

Same Local Network (LAN)

If you're on the same WiFi or network as the host:

• Use the host's local IP (usually 192.168.x.x)
• No port forwarding required
• Firewall still needs to allow connections

3. Public Servers

The easiest way to play multiplayer is joining public servers. No setup required—just find a server and connect!

Many minigame servers require specific commands to join games:

5. Troubleshooting

"Connection Timed Out"

• Verify the server IP and port are correct
• Check if the server is online (use our server list for status)
• Server host may need to configure port forwarding (UDP 5520)
• Try disabling VPN if you're using one

"Connection Refused"

• Server may be at max capacity
• You might be banned from the server
• Server firewall is blocking your connection

High Ping / Lag

• Choose servers in your region (NA, EU, AS, etc.)
• Close bandwidth-heavy applications
• Use wired connection instead of WiFi
• Server may be overloaded—try during off-peak hours

Can't Connect to Friend's Server

• Friend must use their public IP, not local (192.168.x.x)
• Port forwarding must be configured on their router
• Their firewall must allow UDP 5520 inbound
